DPO Session #19 – Privacy by Design: Navigating Dark Patterns – a discussion with Luiza Jarovsky

Privacy by Design Navigating alongside Luiza Jarovsky

Implementing privacy by design is an important obligation under the GDPR. However, it requires a mix of legal and UX design skills to ensure that data protection requirements are integrated in any apps and solutions that process personal data.

In UX, the opposite of privacy by design is the notion of „dark patterns” – deceptive practices that manipulate users into making choices detrimental to their privacy rights. Privacy professionals, as well as designers, must be aware of dark patterns and cooperate to apply meaningful privacy safeguards in projects.

The 19th edition of Privacy Learning’s monthly DPO Sessions aims to unwrap the meaning of dark patterns and look at ways to implement privacy by design principles. Our guest speaker, Luiza Jarovsky, is a privacy expert and Ph.D. researcher who dedicates a significant part of her work to studying and educating the public about deceptive UX practices. Luiza will discuss the following topics with the Privacy Learning DPO Community:

  • Dark patterns in privacy (theory, examples, legislation, cases, reports)
  • The Privacy-Enhancing Design methodology
